Almost a hundred years ago, the Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov conducted his now famous editing experiment in which different objects were added to a given film scene featuring a neutral face. It is said that the audience interpreted the unchanged facial expression as a function of the added object (e.g., an added soup made the face express hunger). One reason why people prefer to watch movies in cinemas may be the surround of the movie screen or its physically huge size. We propose that in these cases, we have to use an EBM approach in which evidence may be looked up in every available clinical report and bibliographic databases are used for searching that evidence. “Facts Are Grasped by Us in Pictures (PT, 2.1). Remarks on Pictures and Facts in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus

This paper proposes a (re)reading of the famous section in the Tractatus Logico-philosophicus, 2.1: “We picture facts to ourselves” and its relation to the similar section in the Prototractatus, 2.1: “Facts are grasped by us in images”. We reject the dominant solution that interprets the relation between facts and images as an isomorphic relation and propose that instead it is an internal relation: there are no facts that are not perceived through images. In other words: For us, linguistic animals, there is no world independent of language.

Digital Mosaic Frameworks - an overview

Art often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we survey in a unified framework several methods to transform raster input images into good quality mosaics. For each of the major different approaches in literature the paper reports a short description and a discussion of the most relevant issues. To complete the survey comparisons among the different techniques both in terms of visual quality and computational complexity are provided.

FIctional Artworks. Literary Ékphrasis and the Invention of Images

The volume is devoted to images in painting, photography and cinema invented by literature. At the same time it intends to question, through this perspective, the relationship between text and image, between verbal and visual in modern and contemporary literature. The authors investigate the mutual boundaries between literature and arts from the point of view of aesthetics, visual culture and literary theory, trying to build a map of the notional ékphrasis, a description which constitutes the work of art while telling it.
